Album Club – Spirit Of Eden
Album Club is a semi-regular thing where we talk about an album which has influenced us, is important to us, or one that we simply enjoy listening to. Like a book club, but with albums. This week it’s my choice: Spirit Of Eden, by Talk Talk.
This is the moment when Talk Talk completely shed the New Romantic pop sound they’d started from: Spirit Of Eden is slow, contemplative, almost ambient. Each song is given room to grow, and the use of reverb and organ gives the album a hushed, churchlike atmosphere – which makes the loud bits (notably the chorus of “Desire”) all the more powerful.
This album has soundtracked many late nights for me – and each time, listening on headphones at 2am, Mark Hollis seems to be singing to me alone.
